Laennec: his medical history.

چکیده
Critical study of the career of Théophile Laënnec, with particular reference to his medical history, gives cause to query the commonly accepted belief that his whole life was a constant battle against pulmonary tuberculosis. He developed respiratory symptoms almost immediately on his arrival in Paris but they were those of bronchial asthma and responded promptly and completely to a change of environment. It was only in the concluding years of his life and when he was worn out by overwork that the symptoms of tuberculosis appeared and thereafter the disease progressed rapidly to its fatal termination.

Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec (1781-1826) made an extensive study of the heart that has been examined by historians in different ways, all inadequate, ranging from open ridicule to bemused indulgence.' Words like "wrong" or "less excellent" have been applied to his conclusions and he has been accused of leaving the study of heart disease in a hopeless "snarl".2 Usually this aspect of Laennec...

The debunking tendencies of modern historiography notwithstanding, historians of medicine still find it difficult to resist depicting the invention of the stethoscope as a defining moment. Laennec's cylinder stands for the apotheosis of the clinico-anatomical programme of the Paris School, for the "disappearance of the sick man", and as the starting point of the long and triumphant march of med...

If you leave this quiet spot and go back towards the town, you come to the church at Ploar6, where Laennec used to worship. It is famous for its gargoyles, and when I visited it, someone was practising a Handel organ concerto. I was disappo...
